Medical Genetics in Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Cho Sechin
Abstract
Every parent expects to have an uncomplicated pregnancy and a healthy newborn. 10 to 15 % of clinically recognized pregnancies are lost during the first trimester of pregnancy. At birth, 2 to 5 % of live born infants have either a major birth defect or genetic disease.
Since 1960, the medical genetic infatuation has exploded and new knowledge has been applied to daily obstetric practices to improve the pregnancy outcome. Every obstetrician is a practicing medical geneticist and should be prepared and be trained to be the one.
To enhance the basic knowledge in medical genetics, this presentation will cover family history, classification of genetic disorders, (single gene disorders, chromosomal disorders, multifactor inheritance) and the known and potential dermatogens. A simple questionnaire to screen genetically "at risk" pregnancies is provided.
Medical genetics has many useful applications to maternal-fetal medicine and will become more important as new information derives from molecular genetics. Ways to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical application must be developed.
The ethical issues surrounding medical genetics have been recognized and vigorously discussed. The question of what is to be considered "natural" needs to be raised. Our obligation to help and to provide treatment and support for a "defective" member of our society requires thoughtful debate and further challenges.
The following is the outline of my presentation. Handouts are included for better understanding and for take-home reading.
